Post Surgery Massage Worthing

Supporting Your Recovery at Every Stage

Whether you are preparing for surgery, recovering in the weeks and months afterwards, or working through the longer process of rehabilitation following injury, the quality of support you receive during this time can make a significant difference to your outcome.

Clinical massage therapy plays a valuable and often underestimated role in surgical and injury recovery — addressing not just the site of treatment, but the wider patterns of tension, compensation and restricted movement that develop in response to pain or immobility.

Before Surgery: Pre-Surgical Preparation

Preparing your body before a planned procedure can meaningfully support your recovery afterwards. Pre-surgical massage treatment focuses on:

  • Reducing tension and inflammation in the surrounding tissues before the procedure

  • Improving circulation and tissue condition in the area to be treated

  • Addressing compensatory patterns and movement restrictions that may have developed due to the condition requiring surgery

  • Supporting nervous system regulation and reducing pre-operative anxiety

  • Establishing a baseline treatment relationship so that post-surgical care can begin sooner and with greater continuity

Many clients find that arriving at surgery in better physical condition — with reduced tension and improved tissue quality — shortens their recovery timeline and reduces post-operative
discomfort.

After Surgery: Post-Surgical Recovery

The weeks and months following surgery place significant demands on the body. Even where a procedure is straightforward, tissues need time and support to heal well.

Common challenges during this period include:

  • Scar tissue formation and adhesions that restrict movement

  • Swelling, fluid retention and poor circulation in the affected area

  • Compensatory tension in surrounding muscles as the body protects the surgical site

  • Reduced mobility and joint stiffness

  • Pain and discomfort away from the surgical site, due to altered movement patterns

  • Post-surgical massage treatment is carefully adapted to the stage of your recovery and always undertaken with full awareness of your surgeon’s guidance and any contraindications. Treatment begins gently and progresses as healing allows.

Scar Tissue Treatment

Scar tissue management is a specific area of post-surgical work that is frequently overlooked, but can have a significant impact on long-term comfort and movement.

As wounds heal, scar tissue forms. If left unaddressed, this tissue can become adhered to underlying structures — restricting movement, generating referred pain elsewhere in the body, and creating a pulling sensation that persists long after the wound itself has healed.

Scar tissue treatment is introduced once the wound has fully closed — typically no sooner than six to eight weeks post-surgery, though this varies by individual and procedure.

Gentle, progressive work on and around the scar encourages the tissue to become more pliable and less adhered, reducing the functional and aesthetic impact of scarring over time.
Conditions where scar tissue treatment is frequently beneficial include recovery from:

  • Orthopaedic surgery (hip and knee replacement, shoulder surgery)

  • Abdominal surgery (including caesarean section, appendectomy, hernia repair)

  • Spinal surgery

  • General surgery where surface or internal scarring is causing discomfort

Longer-Term Rehabilitation

For some clients, recovery extends well beyond the immediate post-surgical period.
Whether due to the nature of the procedure, the presence of chronic pain alongside the surgical condition, or simply the time it takes for the body to fully readjust, longer-term rehabilitation support can make a meaningful difference.

This kind of extended support may include:

  • Addressing movement compensations that have become habitual during recovery

  • Progressive work on scar tissue as the tissue matures and becomes more responsive

  • Supporting return to activity, sport or exercise at an appropriate pace

  • Combining massage with gentle movement methods — including the MELT Method and yoga-based practices — to support joint stability, mobility and body awareness

A Note on Timing and Medical Clearance

Post-surgical massage is not suitable immediately after a procedure. The appropriate timing depends on the type of surgery, the site of the wound and your individual healing progress.

As a general guide, I ask clients to have received clearance from their surgeon or GP before commencing treatment, and I work within any restrictions or recommendations they provide.

If you are in the planning stages ahead of surgery, it is never too early to make contact.

Beginning treatment in the pre-surgical period gives us the opportunity to build a clear picture of your body before the procedure, making post-surgical work more informed and effective.
